The NFL Draft is done. Detroit have had, by most accounts, one of the most successful drafts in recent memory. In previous posts I went into detail day-by-day, but I thought I would briefly roundup the major takes from all 3 posts. Detroit's draft class of 2020 (and my gradings for each) are:- Pick 3 - Jeff Okudah (CB, Ohio State) A Pick 35 - D'Andre Swift (RB, Georgia) A- Pick 67 - Julian Okwara (Edge/LB, Notre Dame) A Pick 75 - Jonah Jackson (G, Ohio State) B+ Pick 121 - Logan Stenberg (G, Kentucky) B+ Pick 166 - Qunitez Cephus (WR, Wisconsin) B+ Pick 172 - Jason Huntley (RB, New Mexico State) B- Pick 197 - John Penisini (DT, Utah) A- Pick 235 - Jashon Cornell (DT, Ohio State) C+ Big picture on the draft - you're looking to get a couple of Day 1 starters from your top picks, a few rotational players from the middle of the draft and some challengers with the late picks, and largely that has been achieved. The top 6 picks are tremendous value and will all either start day 1 or be in the rotation. Huntley is a burner but will need to show a lot to make the roster with Ty Johnson a very similar player and Jamal Agnew as one of the best returners in the game. John Penisini should find his way into the rotation as a run stuffer. Cornell will struggle to find his way into the roster but could threaten a spot as a pass rusher. Overall Grade: A- The highly graded Day 1/2 picks swing the balance here. How do you think we did? Let me know in the comments or on twitter @roarofthelions1 Next up on the blog is: A quick recap of the post-draft rookie UDFA signings and subsequent releases Projecting the 55 man roster and the starting lineups on offense and defense.
look forward to your conclusions on these players/positions after the game today, ty
Thanks Ash, RE TE's - Just to reiterate what Riz said ,& its worth noting what the Lions want their TE3 /4 to do, and how many game reps they'll actually get . Parker Hesse has been taking most Reps in camp primairly as blocker ( & FB ). Mitchel hasn't performed BUT, can Block & has some ST value,& was a draft pick. Zylstra is the best receiver -,but can't block - heresey on this team. So.........bearing in what Campbell said about the WR room ie its about the best players , irrespective of position......how about.......Mitchel as TE4 , & Zylstra ( TE5 ) taking the place of of WR5 ?
Ash, thank you so much for doing these. You and the rest of the ROTL UK gang are fantastic!
